Why This Guide Exists

In this week's newsletter, you got the short version: Wispr Flow lets you talk instead of type in any app on your phone or computer — not just inside Claude or ChatGPT.

This guide walks you through getting it set up step by step, on your computer and your phone, plus a few honest things worth knowing before you dive in.

The One Sentence to Remember

Hold a key, talk, let go — clean, punctuated text appears wherever your cursor was.

Part 1

What It Actually Does

Wispr Flow doesn't just transcribe your words — it cleans them up. It strips out filler words, adds punctuation, and formats the result to fit where you're typing. Here's a real before-and-after:

What You Say (Messy) What Appears (Clean)
"um so I wanted to say happy birthday and uh ask if you're free saturday for lunch maybe around noon" "Happy birthday! Are you free Saturday for lunch, maybe around noon?"

That cleanup happens automatically, every time — you don't have to ask for it. AI in action!

Part 2

Setting It Up on Your Mac or Windows Computer

Setup takes about 5 minutes.

  1. Go to wisprflow.ai and download the app. It's free to start — no credit card needed.
  2. Open the app and sign in with your Google, Apple, or email account.
  3. Allow the two permissions it asks for: Microphone, and Accessibility. That second one is what lets Wispr Flow type into other apps for you — it's supposed to ask for this, it's not a red flag.
  4. Do the quick microphone test — speak, and you'll see the sound bars respond.
  5. Set your shortcut key. The default (usually the fn key, or Ctrl+Option) works fine for most people — you'll hold this key down while you talk.
  6. Try it: open any app — Notes, Mail, a document — hold your key, say a sentence, and let go.
Part 3

Setting It Up on Your iPhone

  1. Search "Wispr Flow" in the App Store and tap Get.
  2. Open the app and sign in with the same account you used on your computer.
  3. Go to Settings, enable the Wispr Flow keyboard, and turn on "Allow Full Access." It needs this to work — every keyboard app asks for it.
  4. In any app, tap the globe icon to switch to the Flow keyboard, tap the microphone, talk, then tap the checkmark.
Part 4

Free vs. Pro

Basic (Free) Pro — $12/mo*
Mac / Windows 2,000 words/week Unlimited
iPhone 1,000 words/week Unlimited
Editing by voice Included
Privacy Mode Included Included
Support Standard Priority

*$12/month billed yearly, or $15/month billed monthly. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial of Pro — no credit card required. Wispr Flow also offers discounts for students, teachers, and nonprofit organizations, worth checking if one applies to you.

Part 5

A Few Things to Know

  • It needs an internet connection. Your words are processed in the cloud, not on your device — no wifi or signal, no dictation.
  • Turn on Privacy Mode if you dictate anything personal — medical details, account numbers, passwords. In Settings, one toggle. It means nothing you say is stored or used to train their AI.
  • Android support is newer than iPhone. It works, but expect a few more rough edges than the iPhone or desktop versions.
  • The free plan is genuinely usable for occasional use. If you write a lot every day, you'll bump into the weekly word limit within a few days — that's when Pro is worth considering.
Part 6

Is It Worth It?

A simple way to decide:

  1. You send a handful of texts and emails a day — the free plan is plenty.
  2. You write a lot — long emails, letters, journaling — the $12/month Pro plan pays for itself in saved time and less sore thumbs.
  3. You're not sure yet — start with the 14-day free trial, then decide. No credit card, no pressure.
